Introductory Blog Post for BASIC

Pastor Roger starts off our blog posts by providing some insights about the purpose and hopes for the blog. Read on to find out more!

Words, whether spoken or written, are powerful (cf. James 3:3-6). Words are more than a
means of communication and information dissemination. They are able to affect and move
people both negatively and positively. On one hand, words can be hurtful, damaging and
deceptive. On the other hand, words can be encouraging, inspiring and truthful. Hence, we
must be careful with words as Proverbs 15:1-2 tell us:

1  A soft answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
2  The tongue of the wise commends knowledge,
but the mouths of fools pour out folly.

What is of greater significance is that our God is a God who speaks. Right in the beginning of
the creation of the world, He spoke, and the world came into being (Genesis 1). He spoke to
His creation, especially to the crown of His creation: Man and Woman. It is no wonder that
we, made in God’s image, can communicate with words. It is His gift to us. However, we
must recognise that as sinners, we are capable of using this gift for evil intent. Nonetheless,
we can be thankful that Jesus came as the incarnate Word to us (John 1:1,14; Hebrews 1:1-
3). In His time on earth, He not only revealed God but lived out the obedient life according
to His Word, even to death on the cross. All who believe in Him are redeemed and our
words can be redeemed for His glory.

So, it is with great joy that we can have this blog to use His gift of words to communicate His
Word. As you read from the contributions of the pastors of Adam Road Presbyterian Church,
leaders and youths of BASIC (youth ministry of ARPC), it is with the hope that you will be
built up, encouraged and inspired to follow Jesus and see how His Word, enabled by the
Holy Spirit, is worked out in the lives of God’s people.

For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you,  5  because our gospel came to
you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You
know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.  6  And you became
imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of
the Holy Spirit,  7  so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in
Achaia (1 Thes 1:4-7).
